Taking a step forward in the field of hybrid car technology, Toyota Motor Corp. recently revealed a new hybrid described as “a more expensive and bigger hybrid-only model than its hit Prius”. The new sedan named “Sai”—which means “talent” and “color”—aims to promote green technology to the market. By using an electric motor instead of the usual gas engine, hybrids will definitely get better mileage than regular cars.

According to the Japanese automaker, the Sai has a bigger 2.4 liter engine. It doubles the mileage of an engine-powered vehicle, specifically getting 23 kilometers per liter. Its predecessor, the Prius only has a 1.8 liter engine, getting 38 kilometers per liter, which goes around 48 mpg on the highway in the U.S. Moreover, this new hybrid is much more expensive as it starts at $37,500 compared to the $22,000 starting price of the Prius.

Provided the increasing awareness of hybrids nowadays and at the same time carmakers starting to enhance their hybrid lineup, it is expected for the Sai to be the frontrunner in creating a more widespread promotion of hybrid cars in a worldwide scale. Get ready for the unveiling of the Lotus Exige Scura in the upcoming 2009 Tokyo Motor Show to be held on the 21st of October 2009.

The name ‘Scura’ is an Italian word the means ‘dark’ from Italian, it reflects the stealth character of this already fierce looking Lotus. This stunner has its matte black paint, contrasting gloss black stripes and carbon fiber highlights on the car’s hood, oil cooler inlet vents, side airscoops and rear spoiler that decorates its excellent style and shape.

Whilst there is no doubt that this is a visually stunning car, the Exige Scura is not just about its looks, it’s also a serious contender to be the best in terms of power, technological features and poise. One of the cars featured on the recent Tokyo auto show is the Pivo 2 concept car from Nissan. It is a bubblier version of the previous version of Pivo concept car that is featured last 2005 on the Tokyo Auto Show.

Pivo 2 takes the idea of an environmentally friendly electric urban commuter vehicle and delivers fun, functionality and a unique relationship between the car and driver. And like its predecessor, The Pivo 2 is electric-powered and the cabin can rotate, thus eliminating the need for a reverse gear. Its in-wheel motors can propel you in different directions, even in sideways. Each of its four wheels are powered by Nissan’s advanced electric In-wheel 3D Motor and can turn through 90 degrees to allow Pivo 2 to drive sideways as well as forward.

Added to the Pivo 2’s features is its in-car Robotic Agent, a voice-recognition interface valet application that can engage in a range of communications from basic vehicle functions to the closet parking space. This feature though, is only available in English and Japanese.

The Pivo’s ergonomic design shows that its cute and blue bubbly car’s design and concept will surely be loved by many, and will be surely is a hit for all Pivo fanatics end even concept lovers alike.

“May the best car win!” said Bob Lutz of General Motors (GM). On a conference last month, he challenged the journalists to find a sedan that can outperform Cadillac CTS-V. The challenge is in a form of track duel which will be held at the Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, New York, near New York City area on October 29, 2009.

GM set up an online application for enthusiasts who want to participate via its website http://www.ctsvchallenge.com/. Around 120 persons applied for an opportunity to race with Lutz; however, that doesn’t mean that all of them will be able to join the race. GM is reported to be gradually decreasing the number of applicants based on the rules.

The basic rule of the challenge is that anyone who has a car comparable to Cadillac CTS-V, such as Mercedes Benz AMG or BMW M5, is welcome to participate. Details on how these participants are selected are not published and no one knows the racing mechanics yet. GM is expecting between five and ten entrants.

Lutz is confident that they have achieved their goal of creating the world’s fastest sedan. “We’re going to take away every last excuse people have not to consider our products. We know that some consumers still think Cadillac cars do not have the top-end performance they believe the German luxury cars have. The development objective of the 556-hp Cadillac CTS- V was to create the world’s best high-performance sedan. In final testing, the car lapped the legendary Nurburgring in 7:59.32, fastest ever for a production sedan (recently eclipsed, reportedly, by Porsche Panamera),” says Lutz.

If Porsche Panamera will be available, participants and spectators should brace themselves for an exciting race and results.

Mitsubishi will feature electric vehicles on the recent Tokyo Auto Show and among them are a plug-in crossover and a cargo version of its electric car.

One of the featured cars from Mitsubishi, the PX-MiEV is a hybrid crossover that contains one electric motor for the front wheels, another for the back, and a 114-hp four-cylinder gasoline engine that can serve either as a generator at low speeds or a source of supplemental propulsion at higher speeds. It is slightly bigger than the bubble-shaped i-MiEV but it uses lithium ion batteries that is similar to the compact car, and it has the same electric-drive operating system to control the motors.

Inside of the concept PX-MiEV coddles, protects, and practically disinfects passengers inside an interior that is the next best thing to a cryogenic chamber, including as it does odor- and bacteria-deactivating seat upholstery, a humidifier and oxygen regulator, anti-aging UV-A–filtering window glass, and a cockpit-like driver’s area with an alertness monitor that will emit a certain smell to tell you to pay attention.

On the other hand, the i-MiEV Cargo is another spinoff of the i-MiEV. It has a large cargo bay in back for use in fleet delivery. And like its i-MiEV base model, the cargo version will have a range of 100 miles on a full battery charge.
