Inflatable seatbelts for better passenger security

by admin on Dec.01, 2009, under News

Looks like Ford is stepping a notch in passenger security. It reported by Autoweek, that the American auto maker will be introducing inflatable seatbelts for passengers which will most likely be during the release of the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer sometime soon.

With the combination of airbag technology, these kinds of seatbelts will be able to neutralize and spread the forces of the crash to different body areas. Thus, it is expected that this will lessen the effects of accidents as well as physical injuries especially to babies, kids and older passengers, compared to ordinary seatbelts. This new development uses cold-compressed gas stored in a cylinder beneath the seats which will inflate 40 milliseconds across the person’s body after a car accident or any other major impact done to the car.

Based on Ford’s crash tests, the inflatable seatbelts are 90% more comfortable than traditional seatbelts because of its padded feel. Moreover, it is compatible with different infant seats available placed at the rear seat of the car.

Ford may be launching these seatbelts with the 2011 Explorer but the company is planning to install these inflatable seatbelts to all of their cars around the world.
