Chevy Volt Electric Car

The Chevrolet Volt will be one of the first retail market vehicles that uses the art of lithium-ion batteries instead of the older and more common nickel-metal type. Lithium batteries are commonly used in cell phones, laptop computers and other small devices that store more energy in less space.

This much-awaited Chevrolet Volt is expected to get 230 miles per gallon in the city. Chevy Volt will be using zero gasoline and will also produce zero emissions. It is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kwh, lithium-ion battery for just trips up to 40miles that can be recharged through a traditional power outlet.

GM called this Volt as an extended-range electric vehicle or E-REV. All of the hybrids you can buy today are parallel hybrids. They are gasoline-powered cars with an electric motor to boost their gas mileage. But the Volt is a series hybrid because it is an electric car with a small gasoline engine to boost its range. It burns no gasoline and it operates entirely as an electric car for its 40 miles after a full charge. This will also comes with an onboard battery charger that handles any type of household current – 110-V and 220-V used for many heavy appliances. A full recharge takes up to 8 hours using 100V power and 3hours using 220V power.

Well the biggest challenge with regards to the cost of electric vehicles specifically is the battery and related components. Compared to other plug-ins, the Volt has a very large battery to ensure that drivers can meet everyday driving needs. What do you think, guys?
