Lower Carbon Emissions with Volvo’s CO2 counter

by admin on Jan.11, 2010, under News

Volvo Group has recently launched new application which serves as a personal C02-counter. It is called Commute Greener and it can be accessed through a website on the internet using a computer or a mobile phone. It gives the user the ability to see the how much carbon dioxide emissions are reduced or increased using different means of transportation such as bus, car, or bike.

A commuter can use the mobile phone to enter the means of transport that are used for commuting to and from work. The program calculates the carbon emissions using different modes of transportation helping the commuter decide which mode is best in helping the environment.

The City of Gothenburg in Sweden is the first city in the world to implement this service to its employees. This technology also provides online community where users can share experience.

Our tests have shown that individuals can quickly reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30 per cent using Commute Greener,” says Magnus Holmqvist at Volvo IT.

The city traffic office agrees that the new tool sets is a good example to the commuters in aligning with the city’s environmental objectives.

“Volvo has been working with environmental care since 1972. We now regard it as an important task to involve individuals,” says Niklas Gustavsson, Vice President Environmental and Public Affairs, AB Volvo.

This project is in line with the United Nation’s program on climate change initiative.

The program is presently available as an application to Iphone. To download the application to other mobile phones, a city, company or organization must first order access to the application for its inhabitants, customers or employees.
