Hummer Sold by GM, Chevy Caprice – Police Car
by admin on Dec.31, 2009, under News
Sorry Hummer fans. Your high powered vehicle is now released by one of the world’s biggest car manufacturer in the planet, not to mention the millions of dollars lost and thousands of people who lost their jobs under this car manufacturer during the global recession.
On GM’s side, this transaction unloads a bi burden off their shoulders. The sale only cost at around $150 million dollars for the sale of this brand to China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. If evaluated, the amount of money involved is just small but this will really help GM on their financial lost.
According to Fritz Henderson, GM President and CEO, “HUMMER is a strong global niche brand and this agreement signifies another important milestone in writing the next chapter for both GM and HUMMER”. “For HUMMER, the combination of its knowledgeable leadership team, vehicle design expertise and the capital financing of Tengzhong portend a successful future.” And as a result of the deal, around 3,000 jobs are expected to be saved.
On the other hand, the struggling auto maker also revived one of their fairly good cars into a police patrol car. The Chevy Caprice is now being catered as a police patrol car for the North American Market. It is a good thing that GM came out with the idea because they realized that the Caprice (the same as the Pontiac G8) is too good to waste.
The Chevy Caprice police car will initially be powered by an E85-compatible 6.0-liter V8 that produces 355 horsepower and 385 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic and, like the G8, power is transferred to the real wheels. GM says the cop car reaches 0 to 60 mph in less than six seconds.
Chevy Volt Electric Car
by admin on Dec.08, 2009, under News
The Chevrolet Volt will be one of the first retail market vehicles that uses the art of lithium-ion batteries instead of the older and more common nickel-metal type. Lithium batteries are commonly used in cell phones, laptop computers and other small devices that store more energy in less space.
This much-awaited Chevrolet Volt is expected to get 230 miles per gallon in the city. Chevy Volt will be using zero gasoline and will also produce zero emissions. It is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kwh, lithium-ion battery for just trips up to 40miles that can be recharged through a traditional power outlet.
GM called this Volt as an extended-range electric vehicle or E-REV. All of the hybrids you can buy today are parallel hybrids. They are gasoline-powered cars with an electric motor to boost their gas mileage. But the Volt is a series hybrid because it is an electric car with a small gasoline engine to boost its range. It burns no gasoline and it operates entirely as an electric car for its 40 miles after a full charge. This will also comes with an onboard battery charger that handles any type of household current – 110-V and 220-V used for many heavy appliances. A full recharge takes up to 8 hours using 100V power and 3hours using 220V power.
Well the biggest challenge with regards to the cost of electric vehicles specifically is the battery and related components. Compared to other plug-ins, the Volt has a very large battery to ensure that drivers can meet everyday driving needs. What do you think, guys? Can Chevy Volt’s Battery running longer than your laptops? Let’s see…
